EMDR is a type of therapy designed to help people process and heal from traumatic memories. In EMDR, therapist guides the person to recall a distressing memory while simultaneously engaging in a form of bilateral stimulation, like following the therapist's finger with their eyes, holding tappers or listening to alternating tones. This process is thought to help the brain reprocess the memory, reducing the emotional intensity and negative impact associated with it. Over time, the goal is for the person to feel less affected by the memory and better able to move forward.
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a brief, structured type of therapy designed to help people process and resolve traumatic memories quickly, often in just a few sessions. It combines elements of different therapies, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), but with its own unique approach. In ART, a therapist guides the person to recall a traumatic memory while following the therapist’s hand movements with their eyes, which can help reduce the memory’s emotional charge. Then, through a technique called “voluntary image replacement,” the person works to replace distressing images or sensations with more positive or neutral ones. The goal of ART is to reframe and desensitize painful memories so they are no longer distressing, allowing the individual to move forward without the weight of past trauma.
Breathwork is a technique that allows an individual to process deep emotions or past traumas. Using conscious connected breathing, this mouth breathing technique where a person uses their breath to process deep emotions or past traumas. It has been shown to reduce stress, promote relaxation, increase emotional awareness, and improve mental clarity.
In substance abuse treatment, motivational interviewing can be especially helpful because it respects the individual's autonomy, helps them clarify their own reasons for wanting to change, and supports a person in building the confidence needed to do so.
Ego state interventions is often used with trauma survivors or people dealing with PTSD, anxiety and other complex emotions. By working with each part directly, this approach can help a person heal, achieve inner harmony, and respond to life more adaptively. It can also be integrated in other therapist, such as EMDR or CBT, for added effectiveness. In ego state therapy, the therapist helps the person recognize and communicate with different parts of themselves, especially those that may be causing distress, like parts that feel anxious, angry or wounded. The goal is to understand each ego state's needs and resolve conflicts or negative beliefs that may exist between them.
C.B.T. (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), and D.B.T. (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), are types of therapy that focus on changing patterns of thought and behavior to improve mental health. C.B.T. aims to help people identify and change negative or distorted thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to emotional issues like anxiety, depression and trauma. It is commonly used for treating a wide range of issues, including anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, and phobias. D.B.T. is a form of D.B.T. that was developed to treat more intense emotional and interpersonal issues, teaching skills in court main areas: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotional Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. It focuses on accepting emotions while also working toward change. D.B.T. is effective for people struggling with intense emotions, self-destructive behaviors, or relationship challenges.
